For residents of Al Rigga, Naif, Al Ras and all of Deira: expert HIV and STD counselling on WhatsApp, chat, voice or video.
Medically reviewed by Dr. Yuvraj Monga, MBBS, MD · Updated
Overview
Deira is Dubai's busiest trading district, a dense mix of souks, hotels, offices and shared accommodation.
Many people who reach us from Al Rigga, Naif and Muraqqabat work long shifts in trading, hospitality or retail and live with several room-mates. Deira's hotels and nightlife also mean that some exposures happen during a single evening that people deeply regret the next morning. What they need first is a calm, honest risk assessment, and clear guidance on whether the next step is PEP, a timed test, or simply reassurance.
This guide covers what people in Deira ask us most: which HIV test to take and when, how long results take, how HIV is confirmed, and what post-test counselling should include. When you're ready, you can talk it through with Dr. Yuvraj Monga, an Indian HIV specialist, online.
We also counsel people in nearby Bur Dubai, Al Qusais and Karama, and across Dubai and the UAE.
The program
Behind this page is the HIV Testing Counselling program of Dr. Yuvraj Monga, MBBS, MD, an Indian HIV, AIDS and STD specialist physician with a fellowship in infectious diseases. Over 25 years he has managed and treated patients from around the world, many of them working in the UAE and the wider Gulf. His counselling follows WHO guidelines and the EXACT program.
Easy consultation, friendly follow-up. We were among the first to build counselling around the whole journey: exposure, anxiety, counselling, testing and treatment.
Local support
Shared rooms, six-day weeks and no private space make it hard to ask for help. Our WhatsApp sessions in Hindi fit around your shift, and nobody at work or in your room needs to know.
A brunch, a party or a dating-app match can lead to a moment of doubt. Don't wait it out: a quick message lets us help you decide on PEP while it can still work.
Know before you test
Before you search for a test in Deira, it helps to understand the setting. These are the facts we explain to almost every client, in plain language:
The medical fitness examination for UAE residence visas, at first application and at renewal, includes an HIV test. Official guidance says applicants must be free of communicable diseases such as HIV and TB.
In Dubai, HIV and STD tests, examinations and prescriptions must come from providers licensed by the Dubai Health Authority (DHA). Licensed facilities follow UAE rules on notifying certain infections, including HIV.
Online counselling with Dr. Monga is health education, risk assessment and emotional support. It is private, and you can begin with only a first name.
We do not give legal or immigration advice, and we never advise anyone to avoid lawful requirements. For visa or employment questions, please consult a qualified UAE legal professional.

Our approach
EXposure · Anxiety · Counselling · Testing & Treatment
An honest review of what happened. PEP timing first.
Tools to stop the late-night symptom searching.
Unhurried sessions on risk, partners, family and work.
The right tests on the right dates, results explained.
Testing journey
Whether you live near Al Rigga or Al Muraqqabat, the testing journey is the same four steps. Pre- and post-test counselling are what make each step make sense:
A risk review and PEP decision before anything else.
A 4th-generation antigen/antibody blood test at a licensed laboratory.
Support through the wait, without constant symptom-checking.
Your result explained in context, retest dates if needed, and a prevention or care plan.
It is the conversation held when you receive an HIV test result. It confirms that you have understood the result correctly, checks whether the test was taken late enough to be conclusive, plans any retest, and, if the result is reactive, provides support and a clear route to specialist care.
A screening result is only as good as its timing and its interpretation. We look at the test type, the date it was taken and the wording on the report, and tell you clearly whether you can trust it or need one more test.
Results
“How long do HIV test results take?” There are really two answers: how soon after an exposure a test becomes reliable, and how long the laboratory takes to report. For people in Deira, a realistic picture looks like this:
| Test | When it becomes reliable after exposure | Typical time to result |
|---|---|---|
| Nucleic acid (RNA) test | Earliest detection, from roughly 10 days onwards | Usually a few days |
| Combined antigen/antibody (4th gen) | Most infections show by 6 weeks; many doctors repeat at 3 months | Commonly 24–48 hours |
| Antibody-only rapid test | Trustworthy from about 3 months | A few minutes; reactive results go to the lab |
| Confirmatory testing | Done only after a reactive screen | Adds several more days at a reference laboratory |
Testing too early is the most common reason people test again and again. Note your exposure date, the test type and the test date, and bring them to your session. Our sister site explains when a retest after a negative result is really needed.

Confirmation
People often ask us, “What test is used to confirm a diagnosis of HIV?” The answer is a confirmation process with several steps:
A highly sensitive 4th-generation antigen/antibody test, or a rapid test. Its job is to miss nothing, so reactive screens must be checked.
Usually an antibody differentiation test or Western blot at a reference laboratory: two independent tests must agree.
A nucleic acid test settles disagreements and detects very early infection.
A fresh blood sample rules out any mix-up before a final answer is given.
“Serology” means blood tests for antibodies and antigen. In a serology test counselling session we go through your report line by line: the assay used, the cut-off values, and what “reactive”, “non-reactive” or “indeterminate” really mean. You can share a photo of the report with your name covered.
After your result
Not sure what your report means? Use this decoder, then book a session so we can look at your result alongside your exposure date and test type:
Means: The test did not find HIV.
Next: Check: which test was it, and how many weeks after the exposure? That decides whether it is final.
Means: A sensitive screening test flagged the sample.
Next: Further testing in a reference laboratory is needed; a small share of reactive screens are false alarms.
Means: Neither clearly positive nor clearly negative.
Next: Common causes include cross-reacting antibodies or very early infection. A repeat test usually gives the answer.
Means: Confirmed by supplementary testing.
Next: Life-changing news, but HIV is now a manageable long-term condition, and U=U protects partners.
Waiting is often the hardest part: these practical tools for coping while you wait for results can help. For a confirmed result, read about HIV treatment, viral load and CD4 and the HIV care continuum.
HIV basics
The human immunodeficiency virus targets the immune system's CD4 cells. Transmission requires specific body fluids to enter the body, usually through condomless anal or vaginal sex or shared needles; kissing, handshakes, shared meals and swimming pools pose no risk.
Some people develop a flu-like illness 2–4 weeks after infection: fever, sore throat, rash, swollen glands, aching muscles, tiredness or mouth ulcers. Many have no symptoms at all. Because these signs are common in everyday illness, and in anxiety, only a correctly timed test can give an answer.

PEP is not offered after 72 hours, so every hour counts.
People diagnosed and treated early live long, healthy lives.
Treatment that suppresses the virus also stops sexual transmission.
Many STIs show no symptoms but still need treatment.

The World Health Organization's 5 Cs describe what every good HIV testing service should offer. Our counselling for Deira is built on them:

Your conversation stays private.
Clear information before, support after.
No diagnosis from a single test.
Linkage to treatment and prevention services.

Dr. Yuvraj Monga is an Indian HIV, AIDS and STD specialist physician (MBBS, MD) with a fellowship in infectious diseases and more than 25 years of practice. For people in Deira he provides online counselling and guidance from India; tests, examinations and prescriptions in the UAE must come from a provider licensed there.
PrEP (pre-exposure prophylaxis) is medicine that people without HIV take before a possible exposure to prevent HIV. The most common form is a daily tablet containing tenofovir and emtricitabine. Taken as prescribed, PrEP reduces the risk of getting HIV from sex by about 99%, according to the US CDC. It does not protect against other STIs, so condoms and regular STI testing still matter.
PrEP is not PEP. PrEP is taken before exposure. If you have already had an exposure in the last 72 hours, you need PEP: please consult a doctor or hospital in your own area immediately. Read PEP vs PrEP and who should consider PrEP.
After a consultation and baseline tests, Dr. Monga can prescribe PrEP. Medicines are couriered anywhere in India, and for clients abroad we discuss the safest legal way to get your PrEP during the consultation.
In the UAE, bringing in or importing HIV medicines is strictly controlled, and breaking these rules can have serious consequences. Never order or carry PrEP into the UAE without confirming it is permitted; discuss local options with a UAE-licensed doctor, or start PrEP while you are in India.
Our vision: a life free of HIV for everyone we counsel, through prevention, early testing and the right treatment.

Many UAE laboratories report a 4th-generation screening result within a day or two, and rapid tests take minutes. If a screen is reactive, confirmatory testing adds several days. What matters more is testing after the window period.
A reactive screen is confirmed with a different assay, such as an HIV-1/HIV-2 differentiation test or Western blot, and sometimes an HIV RNA test, usually on a fresh sample.
It is the conversation when you receive a result: what it means for your exposure date and test type, whether to retest, how to stay protected, and, for a reactive result, support and a route to specialist care.
