Overview
Jumeirah is one of Dubai's most established villa neighbourhoods, with long-term expatriate families and a quieter pace of life.
Families in Jumeirah, Umm Suqeim and Al Wasl often have the same family doctor for years, which is reassuring for most things, but not for a private sexual health worry. Our Jumeirah clients are frequently married men and women dealing with an exposure, or partners who have discovered something difficult. Confidential counselling gives them space to think before deciding what, if anything, to share.
This guide covers what people in Jumeirah ask us most: which HIV test to take and when, how long results take, how HIV is confirmed, and what post-test counselling should include. When you're ready, you can talk it through with Dr. Yuvraj Monga, an Indian HIV specialist, online.
We also counsel people in nearby Al Barsha, Business Bay & Downtown and Bur Dubai, and across Dubai and the UAE.
The program
The HIV Testing Counselling program is run by Dr. Yuvraj Monga, MBBS, MD, an HIV, AIDS and STD specialist physician with a fellowship in infectious diseases and more than 25 years of experience managing and treating patients from around the world, including thousands from the Gulf. Our counselling follows WHO guidelines and our own EXACT program.
Easy consultation, friendly follow-up. We were among the first to build counselling around the whole journey: exposure, anxiety, counselling, testing and treatment.
Local support
Family life leaves little privacy. We help you understand the real risk first, then plan any testing and conversations calmly, without upsetting the household.
Many men and women working in the UAE worry about a spouse in India or here. We help you understand your own risk first, then plan how and when to talk, and how both of you can test safely.
Know before you test
Many expatriates around Jumeirah Beach Road and Umm Suqeim are afraid to even ask a question about HIV. Understanding the rules, and what counselling can and cannot do, is the first step to a calm decision.
HIV screening is part of the UAE's residence-visa medical fitness process. According to the UAE Government, residence applicants must be free of communicable diseases including HIV and TB.
Tests and prescriptions in Dubai come from providers licensed by the Dubai Health Authority (DHA). UAE health regulations require licensed facilities to notify certain infectious diseases, including HIV, to the health authorities.
Online counselling with Dr. Monga is health education, risk assessment and emotional support. It is private, and you can begin with only a first name.
Counselling does not replace legal advice. For anything about visas, employment or the law, consult a qualified professional in the UAE; we will never suggest avoiding lawful obligations.

Our approach
EXposure · Anxiety · Counselling · Testing & Treatment
Facts first: what happened, when, and whether PEP is still possible.
Calm, practical support for the waiting days.
Unhurried sessions on risk, partners, family and work.
A dated plan and clear guidance alongside your UAE care.
Testing journey
Whether you live near Jumeirah Beach Road or Al Wasl, the testing journey is the same four steps. Pre- and post-test counselling are what make each step make sense:
A risk review and PEP decision before anything else.
The window period decides when a result is trustworthy.
Practical tools for the anxious days, and no needless repeat tests.
What it means for you, whether to retest, and what to do next.
It is the conversation held when you receive an HIV test result. It confirms that you have understood the result correctly, checks whether the test was taken late enough to be conclusive, plans any retest, and, if the result is reactive, provides support and a clear route to specialist care.
Most fear begins with a screening report nobody explained. Was it a 4th-generation test or antibody-only? Taken at 2 weeks or 6? Does “reactive” mean positive? HIV screening test counselling answers those questions before and after you test.
Results
Knowing the real HIV test results time helps you plan and stops you reading meaning into a delay. Laboratories in Dubai are generally quick, but the more important clock is the window period:
| Test | When it becomes reliable after exposure | Typical time to result |
|---|---|---|
| Nucleic acid (RNA) test | Earliest detection, from roughly 10 days onwards | Usually a few days |
| Combined antigen/antibody (4th gen) | Most infections show by 6 weeks; many doctors repeat at 3 months | Commonly 24–48 hours |
| Antibody-only rapid test | Trustworthy from about 3 months | A few minutes; reactive results go to the lab |
| Confirmatory testing | Done only after a reactive screen | Adds several more days at a reference laboratory |
Testing too early is the most common reason people test again and again. Note your exposure date, the test type and the test date, and bring them to your session. Our sister site explains when a retest after a negative result is really needed.

Confirmation
People often ask us, “What test is used to confirm a diagnosis of HIV?” The answer is a confirmation process with several steps:
Sensitive by design, so a small number of reactive screens turn out negative on confirmation.
A different assay, such as an HIV-1/HIV-2 antibody differentiation test or a Western blot, run at a reference laboratory.
A nucleic acid test settles disagreements and detects very early infection.
A fresh blood sample rules out any mix-up before a final answer is given.
Index values, signal-to-cutoff ratios, “repeatedly reactive”: lab reports in Dubai use language most people have never seen. We translate it into a clear answer and a next step.
After your result
Not sure what your report means? Use this decoder, then book a session so we can look at your result alongside your exposure date and test type:
Means: No HIV detected by that test.
Next: Conclusive only if taken after the window period for that test type. Otherwise, retest on the right date.
Means: The screening test found something that needs checking.
Next: Not a diagnosis. A confirmatory test is always done before anyone is told they have HIV.
Means: The confirmatory test was unclear.
Next: Usually a non-specific reaction; a repeat sample or RNA test a few weeks later settles it.
Means: HIV infection confirmed by two different tests.
Next: Treatment works: most people reach an undetectable viral load within months. Specialist care follows.
Waiting is often the hardest part: these practical tools for coping while you wait for results can help. For a confirmed result, read about HIV treatment, viral load and CD4 and the HIV care continuum.
HIV basics
The human immunodeficiency virus targets the immune system's CD4 cells. Transmission requires specific body fluids to enter the body, usually through condomless anal or vaginal sex or shared needles; kissing, handshakes, shared meals and swimming pools pose no risk.
Acute HIV, if it causes symptoms at all, looks like a bad flu: fever, sore throat, rash and swollen lymph nodes. In the UAE heat, tiredness and headaches are common for many reasons, which is why symptom-checking online so often makes anxiety worse.

PEP is not offered after 72 hours, so every hour counts.
Early diagnosis and treatment keep the immune system strong.
Effective treatment prevents sexual transmission.
Syphilis, gonorrhoea and chlamydia are often silent and raise HIV risk.
Standards
The World Health Organization's 5 Cs describe what every good HIV testing service should offer. Our counselling for Jumeirah is built on them:
Nobody should be tested without agreeing.
Your conversation stays private.
Clear information before, support after.
Quality-assured testing and confirmation.
A clear route onward, whatever the result.
Local care
Searching for infectious disease doctors near me in Jumeirah will mostly bring up hospital departments and private clinics. Specialist HIV and infectious disease care here is provided by infectious disease clinics at DHA hospitals and DHA-licensed private hospitals. Many residents can book a specialist directly at a licensed private hospital, although insurance plans differ in what they require.

Yes in training and focus: an MBBS, MD physician with an infectious diseases fellowship and 25+ years in HIV and STD care. For clients in Jumeirah, he works online, explaining, planning and supporting, while UAE-licensed clinicians handle examinations, tests and prescriptions.
PrEP (pre-exposure prophylaxis) is medicine that people without HIV take before a possible exposure to prevent HIV. The most common form is a daily tablet containing tenofovir and emtricitabine. Taken as prescribed, PrEP reduces the risk of getting HIV from sex by about 99%, according to the US CDC. It does not protect against other STIs, so condoms and regular STI testing still matter.
PrEP is not PEP. PrEP is taken before exposure. If you have already had an exposure in the last 72 hours, you need PEP: please consult a doctor or hospital in your own area immediately. Read PEP vs PrEP and who should consider PrEP.
After a consultation and baseline tests, Dr. Monga can prescribe PrEP. Medicines are couriered anywhere in India, and for clients abroad we discuss the safest legal way to get your PrEP during the consultation.
In the UAE, bringing in or importing HIV medicines is strictly controlled, and breaking these rules can have serious consequences. Never order or carry PrEP into the UAE without confirming it is permitted; discuss local options with a UAE-licensed doctor, or start PrEP while you are in India.
Our vision: a life free of HIV for everyone we counsel, through prevention, early testing and the right treatment.
