What is the Window Period?

The window period is the time between HIV infection and when a test can detect the virus. During this time, you may test negative even if infected.

10-33 Days 4th Generation Tests (most accurate)
18-45 Days 3rd Generation Tests
45-90 Days Older Tests (less common)

When Should You Test?

  • Immediate: See a doctor for PEP (Post-Exposure Prophylaxis) within 72 hours
  • 2-4 weeks: First test with 4th generation testing
  • 3 months: Confirmatory test for complete accuracy
