When to Start PEP (Post-Exposure Prophylaxis)

Emergency HIV prevention that can save your life

TIME IS CRITICAL!

PEP must be started within 72 hours (3 days) of exposure. The sooner, the better. Within 24 hours is ideal.

What is PEP?

Post-Exposure Prophylaxis (PEP) is emergency antiretroviral medication taken after potential HIV exposure to prevent infection. It involves taking HIV medicines for 28 days. PEP can reduce your risk of HIV infection by more than 80% when started within 72 hours and taken correctly.

When to Start PEP - High-Risk Exposures:

Sexual Exposure

  • Unprotected vaginal or anal sex with HIV-positive person
  • Unprotected sex with person of unknown HIV status (stranger, sex worker)
  • Condom broke during sex with HIV-positive or unknown status partner
  • Sexual assault or rape

Needle/Blood Exposure

  • Sharing needles or syringes with HIV-positive person
  • Accidental needle-stick injury (healthcare workers)
  • Contact with blood from HIV-positive person on open wound

Occupational Exposure

  • Healthcare workers exposed to HIV-infected blood/fluids
  • Laboratory accidents involving HIV samples

PEP Timeline - Every Hour Counts:

IDEAL Within 24 Hours

Maximum effectiveness. Best chance of preventing HIV infection. Seek emergency care immediately.

GOOD 24-48 Hours

Still highly effective. Don't delay - start PEP as soon as possible.

ACCEPTABLE 48-72 Hours

Can still be effective. This is your last window - don't wait any longer.

TOO LATE After 72 Hours

PEP is not recommended. Focus on testing at appropriate window periods instead.
