Overview

HIV Counselling in Sharjah: Start Here

Sharjah is home to one of the largest Indian communities in the UAE, many of whom commute to work in Dubai.

From families in Al Nahda and Al Taawun to students in University City and workers in the industrial areas, Sharjah residents are often stretched between long commutes and crowded homes. Sharjah is also a more conservative emirate, which makes sexual health even harder to talk about. We offer a private space, in Hindi or English, to understand the risk and plan what to do next.

Searching for the best doctors for HIV/AIDS in Sharjah usually starts with one urgent question: was I at risk? Below you'll find honest answers about testing, results times and confirmation, plus how a confidential session with Dr. Yuvraj Monga, an Indian HIV doctor available online, can help.

We also counsel people in nearby Ajman, Al Qusais and Umm Al Quwain, and across Dubai and the UAE.

Support for People in Sharjah

Worried about your wife or husband?

Thinking of your wife or husband before yourself is natural. We help you understand your own risk first, then decide how and when to talk, and how both of you can test safely.

For students

Studying far from home, it is easy to feel there is nobody to ask. Our counselling is private and independent of your university, in Hindi or English.

For workers on long shifts

If you live in shared accommodation and work six days a week, privacy and time are the biggest barriers. A WhatsApp session in Hindi, at a time that suits your shift, needs no clinic visit and involves no one at work.

Know before you test

What Residents of Sharjah Should Know First

For people living in Sharjah, an HIV question rarely feels purely medical. It is tied up with work, residence status and family. Here is what residents should know, stated plainly and responsibly.

Residence-visa medical fitness

Foreign nationals applying for or renewing a UAE residence visa undergo a medical fitness test that includes HIV. The UAE Government states that applicants must be free of communicable diseases such as HIV and TB.

Who can test and treat

In Sharjah, HIV and STD tests, examinations and prescriptions must come from providers licensed by the Ministry of Health and Prevention (MOHAP) / Emirates Health Services, with Sharjah Health Authority. Licensed facilities follow UAE rules on notifying certain infections, including HIV.

What counselling is

Online counselling with Dr. Monga is health education, risk assessment and emotional support. It is private, and you can begin with only a first name.

Legal questions

Counselling does not replace legal advice. For anything about visas, employment or the law, consult a qualified professional in the UAE; we will never suggest avoiding lawful obligations.

Testing journey

Pre- and Post-HIV Test Counselling: Your Testing Journey

Whether you live near Al Nahda (Sharjah) or Al Taawun, the testing journey is the same four steps. Pre- and post-test counselling are what make each step make sense:

  1. 1

    Pre-test counselling

Exposure review, PEP check, the right test type and date, how results are shared.

  2. 2

    The test itself

Blood drawn at a licensed UAE laboratory, usually a 4th-generation test.

  3. 3

    While you wait

Practical tools for the anxious days, and no needless repeat tests.

  4. 4

    Understand the answer

Post-test counselling for every result, reactive or not.

What is post-test counselling?

It is the conversation held when you receive an HIV test result. It confirms that you have understood the result correctly, checks whether the test was taken late enough to be conclusive, plans any retest, and, if the result is reactive, provides support and a clear route to specialist care.

HIV screening test counselling

Screening tests are designed to catch every possible infection, so a reactive screen is a signal to check further, not a diagnosis, and a non-reactive screen is only final after the window period. Understanding just these two facts prevents most of the panic we see.

Results

HIV Test Results Time in Sharjah

Two clocks matter after an exposure in Sharjah: the window period, which decides when a test can be trusted, and the laboratory turnaround. Here is how they compare by test type:

TestWhen it becomes reliable after exposureTypical time to result
HIV RNA (NAT) testCan detect HIV from about 10–33 daysDays, depending on the laboratory
4th-generation antigen/antibody testDetects most infections by about 6 weeksOften within a day or two at many UAE laboratories
Antibody-only rapid testTrustworthy from about 3 monthsA few minutes; reactive results go to the lab
Confirmatory testingDone only after a reactive screenAdds several more days at a reference laboratory

While you wait, resist the urge to retest every few days; it rarely helps. If a result is delayed, a quick call to the laboratory usually explains why. Our guide to the window period explains the timing, and how the HIV window period affects accuracy goes deeper.

Confirmation

What Test Is Used to Confirm a Diagnosis of HIV?

What test is used to confirm a diagnosis of HIV? Not one test, but a sequence. Nobody should be diagnosed on a single screening result:

  1. Screening

A highly sensitive 4th-generation antigen/antibody test, or a rapid test. Its job is to miss nothing, so reactive screens must be checked.

  2. A second, different assay

Usually an antibody differentiation test or Western blot at a reference laboratory: two independent tests must agree.

  3. HIV RNA (NAT) where needed

When results disagree, or infection may be very recent, a nucleic acid test detects the virus directly.

  4. Fresh sample

Most laboratories confirm on a second sample, so no diagnosis rests on a single tube of blood.

Understanding your serology report

HIV serology reports are full of technical terms, and one word can cause days of panic. HIV serology test counselling explains each line, why a supplementary test was run and what the final interpretation tells you, in plain Hindi or English.

After your result

Post-Test Counselling for HIV: Decoding Your Result

Not sure what your report means? Use this decoder, then book a session so we can look at your result alongside your exposure date and test type:

Non-reactive

Means: Nothing found by this test.

Next: Final only after the window period for the test you had; otherwise plan one more test on the right date.

Reactive screen

Means: The first test needs checking.

Next: Confirmation comes next; some reactive screens are false alarms.

Indeterminate

Means: An unclear supplementary result.

Next: Usually resolved with a repeat sample or an RNA test a few weeks later.

Confirmed positive

Means: HIV confirmed by independent tests.

Next: Treatment begins with a specialist; an undetectable viral load protects partners.

Waiting is often the hardest part: these practical tools for coping while you wait for results can help. For a confirmed result, read about HIV treatment, viral load and CD4 and the HIV care continuum.

HIV basics

HIV in Brief: What It Is, Symptoms and Why Early Advice Matters

What is HIV?

HIV (human immunodeficiency virus) weakens the immune system by destroying CD4 cells. It passes through blood, semen, vaginal and rectal fluids and breast milk, most often during condomless sex or through shared needles, and never through everyday contact such as hugging, sharing food or using the same bathroom.

Symptoms

Early HIV can cause fever, rash, sore throat and swollen glands for a week or two, or nothing at all. These overlap with colds, heat exhaustion and stress, so we never diagnose by symptoms. We plan the right test instead.

Read more: HIV basics · early symptoms · high-risk exposures · when to consult

Why consult early?

Time-critical prevention

Talking early is how you find out whether PEP is needed.

Early treatment, normal life

Early diagnosis and treatment keep the immune system strong.

U = U

An undetectable viral load does not pass HIV through sex.

Hidden STIs

Syphilis, gonorrhoea and chlamydia are often silent and raise HIV risk.

Standards

Following WHO Guidelines: the 5 Cs of HIV Testing

The World Health Organization's 5 Cs describe what every good HIV testing service should offer. Our counselling for Sharjah is built on them:

Testing only with your informed agreement.

2

Confidentiality

Your conversation stays private.

3

Counselling

Clear information before, support after.

4

Correct results

Reactive screens are always confirmed.

5

Connection

A clear route onward, whatever the result.

PrEP Explained: What It Is, When to Use It, and How to Get It

What is PrEP?

PrEP (pre-exposure prophylaxis) is medicine that people without HIV take before a possible exposure to prevent HIV. The most common form is a daily tablet containing tenofovir and emtricitabine. Taken as prescribed, PrEP reduces the risk of getting HIV from sex by about 99%, according to the US CDC. It does not protect against other STIs, so condoms and regular STI testing still matter.

Who should consider PrEP?

  • You have a partner living with HIV who is not yet undetectable.
  • You have new or multiple partners and don't always use condoms.
  • You have had an STI in the past six months.
  • You have needed PEP more than once.
  • You share needles or injecting equipment.

How and when do you take it?

  • Daily PrEP: one tablet every day, for anyone at ongoing risk.
  • Event-based (2-1-1) PrEP: an option for some men who have sex with men, timed around sex. Your doctor will tell you if it suits you.
  • Before starting: a negative HIV test, plus kidney and hepatitis B checks.
  • While on PrEP: HIV, STI and kidney tests about every three months.

PrEP is not PEP. PrEP is taken before exposure. If you have already had an exposure in the last 72 hours, you need PEP: please consult a doctor or hospital in your own area immediately. Read PEP vs PrEP and who should consider PrEP.

Why consult an Indian HIV doctor about PrEP?

  • Experience: Dr. Yuvraj Monga has more than 25 years in HIV, AIDS and STD care, with patients from around the world.
  • Affordable: medical care in India costs far less than private care in most countries, and generic PrEP made in India is among the most affordable anywhere.
  • Clear guidance: in counselling, Dr. Monga explains whether PrEP suits you, which tests you need, and the costs and options in your country compared with India.
  • Complete confidentiality: counselling, prescription and follow-up, privately.

Getting your PrEP medicine

After a consultation and baseline tests, Dr. Monga can prescribe PrEP. Medicines are couriered anywhere in India, and for clients abroad we discuss the safest legal way to get your PrEP during the consultation.

In the UAE, bringing in or importing HIV medicines is strictly controlled, and breaking these rules can have serious consequences. Never order or carry PrEP into the UAE without confirming it is permitted; discuss local options with a UAE-licensed doctor, or start PrEP while you are in India.

Our vision: a life free of HIV for everyone we counsel, through prevention, early testing and the right treatment.
