HIV Counselling in Vancouver: Where to Start

Vancouver is where Canada's ‘treatment as prevention’ approach to HIV was pioneered, and it has some of the best HIV services in the world.

With free PrEP for MSP members, online testing through GetCheckedOnline and world-class HIV care at St. Paul's, Vancouver has more options than almost anywhere. Paradoxically, that choice can be confusing. People ask us whether they should test online or in person, whether a rapid test is good enough, how long to wait after an exposure, and how to start PrEP. A short consultation turns a long list of options into one clear plan.

Below you'll find what people in Vancouver ask us most: where infectious disease doctors practise locally, how long an HIV test takes to come back in British Columbia, what test is used to confirm HIV, and what happens in post-test counselling. When you're ready, Dr. Yuvraj Monga can talk it through with you on WhatsApp or video.

People usually find us while searching for the best doctors for HIV/AIDS in Vancouver or an infectious disease specialist nearby. If that's you, this guide and a private session can save you weeks of waiting. Our counselling also covers Surrey, Victoria and Kelowna and the rest of British Columbia.

Infectious Disease Doctors in Vancouver and Local HIV Services

For long-term HIV treatment, Vancouver relies on St. Paul's Hospital and the BC Centre for Excellence in HIV/AIDS, internationally known for HIV treatment research, usually by referral. Pre- and Post-HIV Test Counselling: What's the Difference?

Many people in Vancouver test without anyone explaining what the test can and cannot show. That is why so many leave with a negative result and still feel anxious. Good HIV testing has two conversations around it: one before the test, and one after.

What is post-test counselling?

Post-test counselling is the conversation you have after an HIV test result. For a non-reactive result, it checks whether the test was taken late enough to be conclusive and how to stay negative. For a reactive or indeterminate result, it explains confirmation testing, offers emotional support and connects you to care. It is where a frightening piece of paper becomes a clear next step.

HIV screening test counselling

A screening test is the first test in the sequence, whether a lab blood test, a clinic rapid test or a self-test. Screening test counselling makes sure you know that a non-reactive screen is conclusive only after the window period, and that a reactive screen is not yet a diagnosis. Those two facts alone prevent most of the distress we see.

See how a session runs step by step in our counselling process, or read about early HIV testing options.

HIV Test Results Time in Vancouver

“How long do HIV test results take?” is the question we hear most from Vancouver. The honest answer is that it depends on the test. Here is what to expect in British Columbia:

  1. ~1 minute

    Home self-test kit

Bought at a pharmacy or ordered free through programs in some provinces, the self-test reads in a minute but only looks for antibodies, so test at 12 weeks for a final answer.

  2. Minutes

    Rapid point-of-care test

Many clinics in Vancouver offer a finger-prick rapid test with results during the visit. A reactive rapid test always needs a lab blood test to confirm it.

  3. Up to ~2 weeks

    Fourth-generation lab test

Blood drawn at a clinic or lab in Vancouver is screened for p24 antigen plus antibodies. Most infections show by 6 weeks; many clinicians repeat at 3 months for certainty. Ask how results are shared: many British Columbia clinics call only if something needs follow-up, so confirm the plan.

  4. A few more days

    Supplementary testing

A reactive screen goes to the BCCDC Public Health Laboratory for a different confirmatory assay, sometimes with an HIV RNA test.

How long HIV test results take in Vancouver, and when each test becomes reliable.

No news is usually just a busy lab, not bad news. If you are on PEP, your doctor will usually plan HIV tests about 4–6 weeks and 3 months after the exposure, and those dates matter more than how fast any single result arrives.

For a deeper look at timing, read how the HIV window period affects test accuracy and how reliable home HIV test kits are on our sister site, PEP Treatment for HIV.

What Test Is Used to Confirm a Diagnosis of HIV?

If a screening test from a clinic in Vancouver comes back reactive, it is not the end of the story. Here is what test is used to confirm a diagnosis of HIV, step by step:

1

The screen

Highly sensitive by design. It flags anything that might be HIV, which is why a small number of reactive screens turn out negative on confirmation.

2

Laboratory confirmation

Performed by the BCCDC Public Health Laboratory with a confirmatory immunoassay distinct from the screen.

3

Nucleic acid test if needed

If results disagree or infection may be very recent, an HIV RNA test can detect the virus itself. A repeat sample is often taken to rule out a mix-up.

4

A fresh sample

Most labs want a second blood sample before a final diagnosis, so no one is diagnosed on a single tube of blood.

HIV serology test counselling

“Serology” simply means tests on the blood serum for antibodies and antigens. HIV serology test counselling helps you read the lab report: what “reactive”, “non-reactive” and “indeterminate” mean, why a supplementary test was run, and what the final interpretation tells you. We go through your report line by line.

Post-Test Counselling for HIV: What Happens After Each Result

Post-test counselling looks different depending on what the report says. Here is what we cover for each result, for people in Vancouver and everywhere else:

Non-reactive (negative)

A non-reactive result is reassuring, but only conclusive if the test was done late enough. We check the date and test type with you, plan any final retest and then help you close the chapter, which for many anxious people is the hardest part.

  • Which test type did I have?
  • Was it 6 weeks or 3 months after?
  • What about other STIs?

Indeterminate

An indeterminate result means the lab could not give a clear answer. It can happen very early in an infection, but more often it is a non-specific reaction in someone without HIV. The lab will ask for a repeat sample, usually within a few weeks. Waiting is difficult, and support during this time matters.

  • Could this be a false reaction?
  • Will an RNA test help?
  • Should I avoid sex until it's clear?

Reactive / confirmed positive

A confirmed diagnosis changes plans, not your future. HIV specialists in Vancouver will start treatment quickly, and most people reach an undetectable viral load within months. Counselling gives you space for the emotions, and practical help with who to tell, when, and how.

  • How soon does treatment start?
  • Will my employer find out?
  • Can I still have children?

Waiting is often the hardest part: these practical tools for coping while you wait for HIV results can help. If your result is confirmed positive, read about HIV treatment options, viral load and CD4 counts and the HIV care continuum, from diagnosis to undetectable.

Questions about HIV disclosure and the law in Canada are complex. For legal advice, contact a legal clinic such as the HIV & AIDS Legal Clinic Ontario (HALCO) or the HIV Legal Network.

Studying in Vancouver is exciting, but a sexual health scare far from home can be isolating. Campus and community sexual health clinics test students confidentially, and nothing is reported to your school or immigration file. Many international students in Vancouver first contact us simply to ask whether a test is needed at all, and when; often in Punjabi or Hindi. Visiting family in India soon? HIV in Brief: What It Is, Symptoms, and Why Early Advice Matters

What is HIV?

HIV is a virus that targets the CD4 cells of the immune system. It is transmitted through specific body fluids, mainly during sex without a condom or through shared injection equipment, and not through kissing, hugs, food or toilets. Left untreated, it can lead to AIDS; treated early, people live long and healthy lives.

Symptoms to know about

Early HIV, called acute or primary infection, sometimes causes fever, rash and swollen glands for a week or two. Just as often it is silent. Symptom-checking online usually increases anxiety without giving an answer; a correctly timed test does both.

  • Muscle aches
  • Fatigue
  • Night sweats
  • Mouth ulcers
  • Fever
  • Sore throat
  • Rash
  • Swollen lymph nodes

Read more about HIV basics, early HIV symptoms, high-risk exposures and when to consult a doctor.

Why consult early?

PEP closes at 72 hours

Emergency HIV medicine after an exposure works only if started within 72 hours, and the sooner the better.

Stronger immunity

The earlier HIV is found and treated, the more CD4 cells are preserved.

Protecting partners

An undetectable viral load means HIV is not transmitted through sex.

Silent STIs

Syphilis, gonorrhoea and chlamydia often cause no symptoms and raise HIV risk, so they belong in the same test plan.

Following WHO Guidelines: The 5 Cs of HIV Testing

The World Health Organization sets out five principles for every HIV testing service, known as the 5 Cs. Canadian testing guidance follows the same spirit, and our counselling for Vancouver is built on them:

1

Consent

Nobody should be tested without agreeing to it.

2

Confidentiality

Health information protected by law and by us.

3

Counselling

Pre-test information and post-test counselling for every result.

4

Correct results

Quality-assured testing and confirmation before diagnosis.

5

Connection

Linkage to prevention, treatment and care after the test.

Managing PEP side effects

Feeling queasy

A light snack with each dose often helps; your prescriber can add an anti-nausea tablet.

Gas and bloating

Avoid fizzy drinks and heavy meals for a few days.

Loose stools

Oral rehydration and bland food; seek care after two days.

Tiredness & headache

Regular sleep, hydration, same dose time daily.

Fever

Not a typical PEP side effect. Contact a doctor promptly, especially with a rash.

Talk to your prescriber before stopping PEP. Go to emergency care for a fever with rash, jaundice, dark urine, severe belly pain or vomiting you cannot stop.

HIV Testing and Counselling Questions from Vancouver

Who are the best doctors for HIV/AIDS in Vancouver?

Specialist HIV care in Vancouver is led mainly by St. Paul's Hospital and the BC Centre for Excellence in HIV/AIDS, internationally known for HIV treatment research. The best choice depends on your needs, location and referral. Dr. Yuvraj Monga offers online counselling to help you understand your situation and prepare before you choose.

Is Dr. Monga an infectious disease doctor?

Dr. Yuvraj Monga is an HIV, AIDS and STD specialist physician (MBBS, MD) with a fellowship in infectious diseases and more than 25 years of experience. He provides online counselling, education and guidance from India. Tests and prescriptions in Canada must come from a locally licensed provider.

How long do HIV test results take in Vancouver?

Self-tests and rapid clinic tests give results in minutes. A standard lab blood test usually takes from a few days to about two weeks. If the screen is reactive, confirmation at the BCCDC Public Health Laboratory adds a few more days.

What happens in pre- and post-test HIV counselling?

Before the test, you discuss the exposure, the window period, the right test type and how you will get results. After the test, the result is explained, any retest is scheduled, and you get a prevention plan or, if needed, emotional support and a referral.

Is counselling required before an HIV screening test?

WHO recommends that everyone receives clear pre-test information and gives informed consent; a longer counselling session is optional but helpful if you are anxious. Post-test counselling is important for every result, and essential for a reactive one.

What test is used to confirm a diagnosis of HIV?

A reactive screening test is confirmed in a public health laboratory with a different assay, usually an HIV-1/HIV-2 antibody differentiation test, and sometimes an HIV RNA (nucleic acid) test. A second sample is often taken before a diagnosis is given.

How much does online counselling cost?

The online counselling package is US$99 for people in Canada. What it includes is confirmed on WhatsApp before you pay.

Can I get tested anonymously in Vancouver?

GetCheckedOnline from the BC Centre for Disease Control lets residents in many areas order STI and HIV lab tests without a clinic visit, and non-nominal HIV testing is available.

What is post-test counselling for HIV?

It is the conversation after an HIV test result. It explains what the result means for your exposure date and test type, whether you need a repeat test, how to stay protected, and, for a reactive result, how confirmation, treatment and partner notification work.

Where can I get PEP in Vancouver at night or on weekends?

Go to a hospital emergency department and ask for an HIV PEP assessment. PEP must start within 72 hours of the exposure, and the sooner the better.

Where can I get an HIV test in Vancouver?

Options in Vancouver include Vancouver Coastal Health sexual health clinics and GetCheckedOnline (BCCDC). GetCheckedOnline from the BC Centre for Disease Control lets residents in many areas order STI and HIV lab tests without a clinic visit, and non-nominal HIV testing is available. Check hours and eligibility before you go, and test at the right time after your exposure.

Is there an infectious disease or HIV clinic in Vancouver?

Yes. Specialist HIV care in Vancouver is provided by St. Paul's Hospital and the BC Centre for Excellence in HIV/AIDS, internationally known for HIV treatment research. You usually need a referral from a family doctor, nurse practitioner or walk-in clinic, but you can get tested without one.

Will an HIV test affect my study permit or immigration application?

A test at a local clinic is confidential and separate from immigration. The immigration medical exam includes its own HIV test for most permanent-residence applicants, and HIV on its own does not automatically make someone inadmissible; IRCC assesses each case.

Can I talk to Dr. Monga in Punjabi?

Yes. For people in Vancouver, sessions are available in English and Punjabi, and in Hindi too. Just mention your preferred language when you message us on WhatsApp.

What time are sessions for Vancouver?

Sessions are booked in your local time (Pacific Time). India is 13 hours 30 minutes ahead, one hour less in summer.
