For residents of Al Nuaimiya, Al Rashidiya, Al Rawda and all of Ajman: expert HIV and STD counselling on WhatsApp, chat, voice or video.
Medically reviewed by Dr. Yuvraj Monga, MBBS, MD · Updated
Overview
Ajman, the UAE's smallest emirate, is a popular, affordable home for families and workers who commute to Sharjah and Dubai.
Many Ajman residents live in shared apartments in Al Nuaimiya and Al Rashidiya and have little time or privacy. Healthcare here falls under the Ministry of Health and Prevention and licensed private providers. Our Ajman clients often want to understand their risk and the meaning of a test before deciding whether to visit a clinic at all.
This guide covers what people in Ajman ask us most: which HIV test to take and when, how long results take, how HIV is confirmed, and what post-test counselling should include. When you're ready, you can talk it through with Dr. Yuvraj Monga, an Indian HIV specialist, online.
We also counsel people in nearby Sharjah, Umm Al Quwain and Al Qusais, and across Dubai and the UAE.
The program
Dr. Yuvraj Monga, MBBS, MD, leads the HIV Testing Counselling program. An Indian HIV, AIDS and STD specialist with a fellowship in infectious diseases, he has spent over 25 years managing and treating patients from many countries, many of them expatriates living in the Gulf. Every session follows WHO guidelines and the EXACT program.
Easy consultation, friendly follow-up. We were among the first to build counselling around the whole journey: exposure, anxiety, counselling, testing and treatment.
Testing journey
Whether you live near Al Nuaimiya or Al Jurf, the testing journey is the same four steps. Pre- and post-test counselling are what make each step make sense:
A risk review and PEP decision before anything else.
The window period decides when a result is trustworthy.
Support for anxiety while you wait, so you don't repeat tests needlessly.
What it means for you, whether to retest, and what to do next.
It is the conversation held when you receive an HIV test result. It confirms that you have understood the result correctly, checks whether the test was taken late enough to be conclusive, plans any retest, and, if the result is reactive, provides support and a clear route to specialist care.
Screening tests are designed to catch every possible infection, so a reactive screen is a signal to check further, not a diagnosis, and a non-reactive screen is only final after the window period. Understanding just these two facts prevents most of the panic we see.
Results
Two clocks matter after an exposure in Ajman: the window period, which decides when a test can be trusted, and the laboratory turnaround. Here is how they compare by test type:
| Test | When it becomes reliable after exposure | Typical time to result |
|---|---|---|
| HIV RNA (NAT) test | Can detect HIV from about 10–33 days | Days, depending on the laboratory |
| Combined antigen/antibody (4th gen) | Most infections show by 6 weeks; many doctors repeat at 3 months | Commonly 24–48 hours |
| Antibody-only rapid test | Trustworthy from about 3 months | A few minutes; reactive results go to the lab |
| Confirmation after a reactive screen | Supplementary assays at a reference lab | Several additional days |
Testing too early is the most common reason people test again and again. Note your exposure date, the test type and the test date, and bring them to your session. Our sister site explains when a retest after a negative result is really needed.

Confirmation
People often ask us, “What test is used to confirm a diagnosis of HIV?” The answer is a confirmation process with several steps:
A highly sensitive 4th-generation antigen/antibody test, or a rapid test. Its job is to miss nothing, so reactive screens must be checked.
A different assay, such as an HIV-1/HIV-2 antibody differentiation test or a Western blot, run at a reference laboratory.
When results disagree, or infection may be very recent, a nucleic acid test detects the virus directly.
A fresh blood sample rules out any mix-up before a final answer is given.
“Serology” means blood tests for antibodies and antigen. In a serology test counselling session we go through your report line by line: the assay used, the cut-off values, and what “reactive”, “non-reactive” or “indeterminate” really mean. You can share a photo of the report with your name covered.
After your result
Every result needs a different conversation. This is how we approach post-test counselling with people from Al Nuaimiya, Al Rashidiya and the rest of Ajman:
Means: The test did not find HIV.
Next: Check: which test was it, and how many weeks after the exposure? That decides whether it is final.
Means: A sensitive screening test flagged the sample.
Next: Further testing in a reference laboratory is needed; a small share of reactive screens are false alarms.
Means: Neither clearly positive nor clearly negative.
Next: Common causes include cross-reacting antibodies or very early infection. A repeat test usually gives the answer.
Means: Confirmed by supplementary testing.
Next: Life-changing news, but HIV is now a manageable long-term condition, and U=U protects partners.
Waiting is often the hardest part: these practical tools for coping while you wait for results can help. For a confirmed result, read about HIV treatment, viral load and CD4 and the HIV care continuum.
Know before you test
Many expatriates around Al Nuaimiya and Al Rashidiya are afraid to even ask a question about HIV. Understanding the rules, and what counselling can and cannot do, is the first step to a calm decision.
HIV screening is part of the UAE's residence-visa medical fitness process. According to the UAE Government, residence applicants must be free of communicable diseases including HIV and TB.
Tests and prescriptions in Ajman come from providers licensed by the Ministry of Health and Prevention (MOHAP) / Emirates Health Services. UAE health regulations require licensed facilities to notify certain infectious diseases, including HIV, to the health authorities.
Counselling gives you accurate information and a clear plan before you act. It is private, unhurried and available in Hindi or English.
We are doctors, not lawyers. We never advise anyone to sidestep lawful requirements; for visa or employment questions, please speak to a qualified UAE legal professional.

Our approach
EXposure · Anxiety · Counselling · Testing & Treatment
An honest review of what happened. PEP timing first.
Tools to stop the late-night symptom searching.
One-to-one time for every question, in your language.
A dated plan and clear guidance alongside your UAE care.
Local support
Many men and women working in the UAE worry about a spouse in India or here. We help you understand your own risk first, then plan how and when to talk, and how both of you can test safely.
If you live in shared accommodation and work six days a week, privacy and time are the biggest barriers. A WhatsApp session in Hindi, at a time that suits your shift, needs no clinic visit and involves no one at work.
Family life leaves little privacy. We help you understand the real risk first, then plan any testing and conversations calmly, without upsetting the household.
Local care
Searching for infectious disease doctors near me in Ajman will mostly bring up hospital departments and private clinics. Specialist HIV and infectious disease care here is provided by Emirates Health Services hospitals and licensed private hospitals in Ajman and Sharjah. Many residents can book a specialist directly at a licensed private hospital, although insurance plans differ in what they require.
Go here first if an exposure happened in the last 72 hours.
For HIV and STD testing, treatment and specialist follow-up in the emirate.
Many residents' plans cover outpatient consultations and laboratory tests; check your network.
Confidential guidance on risk, timing, results and anxiety, in Hindi or English.

He trained in medicine (MBBS, MD), completed a fellowship in infectious diseases in Australia and has focused on HIV, AIDS and STDs for over 25 years. Many in Ajman search for an Indian HIV doctor in Dubai online; that is exactly his role: counselling and guidance online, alongside your licensed UAE care.
PrEP (pre-exposure prophylaxis) is medicine that people without HIV take before a possible exposure to prevent HIV. The most common form is a daily tablet containing tenofovir and emtricitabine. Taken as prescribed, PrEP reduces the risk of getting HIV from sex by about 99%, according to the US CDC. It does not protect against other STIs, so condoms and regular STI testing still matter.
PrEP is not PEP. PrEP is taken before exposure. If you have already had an exposure in the last 72 hours, you need PEP: please consult a doctor or hospital in your own area immediately. Read PEP vs PrEP and who should consider PrEP.
After a consultation and baseline tests, Dr. Monga can prescribe PrEP. Medicines are couriered anywhere in India, and for clients abroad we discuss the safest legal way to get your PrEP during the consultation.
In the UAE, bringing in or importing HIV medicines is strictly controlled, and breaking these rules can have serious consequences. Never order or carry PrEP into the UAE without confirming it is permitted; discuss local options with a UAE-licensed doctor, or start PrEP while you are in India.
Our vision: a life free of HIV for everyone we counsel, through prevention, early testing and the right treatment.

Book on WhatsAppHIV basics
HIV is a virus that gradually depletes the CD4 cells which coordinate the body's defences. It needs a specific route, mainly condomless sex or shared injecting equipment. Without treatment it can progress to AIDS; with treatment, people live long, healthy lives.
Some people develop a flu-like illness 2–4 weeks after infection: fever, sore throat, rash, swollen glands, aching muscles, tiredness or mouth ulcers. Many have no symptoms at all. Because these signs are common in everyday illness, and in anxiety, only a correctly timed test can give an answer.
