Overview
Ras Al Khaimah combines a growing resort and tourism industry on Al Marjan Island and Al Hamra with industrial zones and established residential areas.
Hotel and resort staff, factory and quarry workers, and long-time families all call RAK home. Seasonal tourism brings visitors too, and some of our RAK clients are people who had an exposure while working in hospitality. We help them make a fast decision about PEP and a clear plan for testing.
This guide covers what people in Ras Al Khaimah ask us most: which HIV test to take and when, how long results take, how HIV is confirmed, and what post-test counselling should include. When you're ready, you can talk it through with Dr. Yuvraj Monga, an Indian HIV specialist, online.
We also counsel people in nearby Umm Al Quwain, Fujairah and Ajman, and across Dubai and the UAE.
The program
The HIV Testing Counselling program is run by Dr. Yuvraj Monga, MBBS, MD, an HIV, AIDS and STD specialist physician with a fellowship in infectious diseases and more than 25 years of experience managing and treating patients from around the world, including thousands from the Gulf. Our counselling follows WHO guidelines and our own EXACT program.
Easy consultation, friendly follow-up. We were among the first to build counselling around the whole journey: exposure, anxiety, counselling, testing and treatment.
Testing journey
Pre-test counselling prepares you before blood is drawn: was the exposure risky, which test suits your timing, and how will you receive the result? Post-test counselling turns the result into a plan. In busy clinics both are often brief; a dedicated session gives you time for every question, in your own language.
A risk review and PEP decision before anything else.
The window period decides when a result is trustworthy.
Support for anxiety while you wait, so you don't repeat tests needlessly.
Post-test counselling for every result, reactive or not.
A structured discussion when a result is given: is the result final for your exposure date, is another test needed, how do you stay protected, and, if it is reactive, what happens next. For people in Ras Al Khaimah, it is often the conversation they never got at the laboratory counter.
Most fear begins with a screening report nobody explained. Was it a 4th-generation test or antibody-only? Taken at 2 weeks or 6? Does “reactive” mean positive? HIV screening test counselling answers those questions before and after you test.
Results
Knowing the real HIV test results time helps you plan and stops you reading meaning into a delay. Laboratories in Ras Al Khaimah are generally quick, but the more important clock is the window period:
| Test | When it becomes reliable after exposure | Typical time to result |
|---|---|---|
| Nucleic acid (RNA) test | Earliest detection, from roughly 10 days onwards | Usually a few days |
| 4th-generation antigen/antibody test | Detects most infections by about 6 weeks | Often within a day or two at many UAE laboratories |
| Rapid antibody test | Reliable from about 12 weeks | Minutes; a reactive result needs lab confirmation |
| Confirmatory testing | Done only after a reactive screen | Adds several more days at a reference laboratory |
Turnaround times vary by laboratory; ask when you book. If you took PEP, follow-up HIV tests are usually planned about 4–6 weeks and 3 months after the exposure. Read more about how the HIV window period affects accuracy and our own guide to the window period.

Confirmation
People often ask us, “What test is used to confirm a diagnosis of HIV?” The answer is a confirmation process with several steps:
Sensitive by design, so a small number of reactive screens turn out negative on confirmation.
A different assay, such as an HIV-1/HIV-2 antibody differentiation test or a Western blot, run at a reference laboratory.
A nucleic acid test settles disagreements and detects very early infection.
A fresh blood sample rules out any mix-up before a final answer is given.
“Serology” means blood tests for antibodies and antigen. In a serology test counselling session we go through your report line by line: the assay used, the cut-off values, and what “reactive”, “non-reactive” or “indeterminate” really mean. You can share a photo of the report with your name covered.
After your result
Post-test counselling for HIV depends entirely on what the report says. Here is a simple decoder, and what we cover with clients in Ras Al Khaimah for each result:
Means: The test did not find HIV.
Next: Check: which test was it, and how many weeks after the exposure? That decides whether it is final.
Means: A sensitive screening test flagged the sample.
Next: Further testing in a reference laboratory is needed; a small share of reactive screens are false alarms.
Means: Neither clearly positive nor clearly negative.
Next: Common causes include cross-reacting antibodies or very early infection. A repeat test usually gives the answer.
Means: Confirmed by supplementary testing.
Next: Life-changing news, but HIV is now a manageable long-term condition, and U=U protects partners.
Waiting is often the hardest part: these practical tools for coping while you wait for results can help. For a confirmed result, read about HIV treatment, viral load and CD4 and the HIV care continuum.
Know before you test
For people living in Ras Al Khaimah, an HIV question rarely feels purely medical. It is tied up with work, residence status and family. Here is what residents should know, stated plainly and responsibly.
Foreign nationals applying for or renewing a UAE residence visa undergo a medical fitness test that includes HIV. The UAE Government states that applicants must be free of communicable diseases such as HIV and TB.
Tests and prescriptions in Ras Al Khaimah come from providers licensed by the Ministry of Health and Prevention (MOHAP) / Emirates Health Services. UAE health regulations require licensed facilities to notify certain infectious diseases, including HIV, to the health authorities.
A confidential conversation: an honest look at your risk, the right test and timing, and support with anxiety. A first name is enough to begin.
We do not give legal or immigration advice, and we never advise anyone to avoid lawful requirements. For visa or employment questions, please consult a qualified UAE legal professional.

He trained in medicine (MBBS, MD), completed a fellowship in infectious diseases in Australia and has focused on HIV, AIDS and STDs for over 25 years. Many in Ras Al Khaimah search for an Indian HIV doctor in Dubai online; that is exactly his role: counselling and guidance online, alongside your licensed UAE care.
PrEP (pre-exposure prophylaxis) is medicine that people without HIV take before a possible exposure to prevent HIV. The most common form is a daily tablet containing tenofovir and emtricitabine. Taken as prescribed, PrEP reduces the risk of getting HIV from sex by about 99%, according to the US CDC. It does not protect against other STIs, so condoms and regular STI testing still matter.
PrEP is not PEP. PrEP is taken before exposure. If you have already had an exposure in the last 72 hours, you need PEP: please consult a doctor or hospital in your own area immediately. Read PEP vs PrEP and who should consider PrEP.
After a consultation and baseline tests, Dr. Monga can prescribe PrEP. Medicines are couriered anywhere in India, and for clients abroad we discuss the safest legal way to get your PrEP during the consultation.
In the UAE, bringing in or importing HIV medicines is strictly controlled, and breaking these rules can have serious consequences. Never order or carry PrEP into the UAE without confirming it is permitted; discuss local options with a UAE-licensed doctor, or start PrEP while you are in India.
Our vision: a life free of HIV for everyone we counsel, through prevention, early testing and the right treatment.

HIV (human immunodeficiency virus) weakens the immune system by destroying CD4 cells. It passes through blood, semen, vaginal and rectal fluids and breast milk, most often during condomless sex or through shared needles, and never through everyday contact such as hugging, sharing food or using the same bathroom.
Some people develop a flu-like illness 2–4 weeks after infection: fever, sore throat, rash, swollen glands, aching muscles, tiredness or mouth ulcers. Many have no symptoms at all. Because these signs are common in everyday illness, and in anxiety, only a correctly timed test can give an answer.

PEP is not offered after 72 hours, so every hour counts.
Early diagnosis and treatment keep the immune system strong.
Effective treatment prevents sexual transmission.
Syphilis, gonorrhoea and chlamydia are often silent and raise HIV risk.
