For residents of Fujairah City, Dibba Al Fujairah, Masafi and all of Fujairah: expert HIV and STD counselling on WhatsApp, chat, voice or video.
Medically reviewed by Dr. Yuvraj Monga, MBBS, MD · Updated
Overview
Fujairah, on the Gulf of Oman coast, is home to one of the world's biggest bunkering ports and a large community of seafarers and port workers.
Seafarers, tanker crews and port staff often pass through Fujairah with limited shore time and no regular doctor in the UAE. Residents of the East Coast also live a long drive from Dubai's specialist clinics. Online counselling means expert advice is available wherever you are, even between voyages.
This guide covers what people in Fujairah ask us most: which HIV test to take and when, how long results take, how HIV is confirmed, and what post-test counselling should include. When you're ready, you can talk it through with Dr. Yuvraj Monga, an Indian HIV specialist, online.
We also counsel people in nearby Khor Fakkan, Ras Al Khaimah and Sharjah, and across Dubai and the UAE.
The program
The HIV Testing Counselling program is run by Dr. Yuvraj Monga, MBBS, MD, an HIV, AIDS and STD specialist physician with a fellowship in infectious diseases and more than 25 years of experience managing and treating patients from around the world, including thousands from the Gulf. Our counselling follows WHO guidelines and our own EXACT program.
Easy consultation, friendly follow-up. We were among the first to build counselling around the whole journey: exposure, anxiety, counselling, testing and treatment.
Testing journey
Good HIV testing has two conversations around it. Before the test: the right test at the right time. After the test: what the result really means for you. People in Fujairah often get the test without either conversation, which is why so many stay anxious after a negative result.
Was it risky? Is PEP still possible? Which test, on which date?
A 4th-generation antigen/antibody blood test at a licensed laboratory.
Support through the wait, without constant symptom-checking.
What it means for you, whether to retest, and what to do next.
The part of HIV testing that answers: “So what does this mean for me?” A doctor or counsellor explains your result against your exposure date and test type, tells you whether you need another test, and helps you take the next step, whatever the result.
Most fear begins with a screening report nobody explained. Was it a 4th-generation test or antibody-only? Taken at 2 weeks or 6? Does “reactive” mean positive? HIV screening test counselling answers those questions before and after you test.
Results
Knowing the real HIV test results time helps you plan and stops you reading meaning into a delay. Laboratories in Fujairah are generally quick, but the more important clock is the window period:
| Test | When it becomes reliable after exposure | Typical time to result |
|---|---|---|
| Nucleic acid (RNA) test | Earliest detection, from roughly 10 days onwards | Usually a few days |
| 4th-generation antigen/antibody test | Detects most infections by about 6 weeks | Often within a day or two at many UAE laboratories |
| Rapid antibody test | Reliable from about 12 weeks | Minutes; a reactive result needs lab confirmation |
| Confirmation after a reactive screen | Supplementary assays at a reference lab | Several additional days |
Testing too early is the most common reason people test again and again. Note your exposure date, the test type and the test date, and bring them to your session. Our sister site explains when a retest after a negative result is really needed.

Confirmation
If a screening test taken in Fujairah comes back reactive, it is not yet a diagnosis. This is what test is used to confirm a diagnosis of HIV, step by step:
Sensitive by design, so a small number of reactive screens turn out negative on confirmation.
A different assay, such as an HIV-1/HIV-2 antibody differentiation test or a Western blot, run at a reference laboratory.
When results disagree, or infection may be very recent, a nucleic acid test detects the virus directly.
A fresh blood sample rules out any mix-up before a final answer is given.
HIV serology reports are full of technical terms, and one word can cause days of panic. HIV serology test counselling explains each line, why a supplementary test was run and what the final interpretation tells you, in plain Hindi or English.
After your result
Post-test counselling for HIV depends entirely on what the report says. Here is a simple decoder, and what we cover with clients in Fujairah for each result:
Means: Nothing found by this test.
Next: Final only after the window period for the test you had; otherwise plan one more test on the right date.
Means: The first test needs checking.
Next: Confirmation comes next; some reactive screens are false alarms.
Means: An unclear supplementary result.
Next: Usually resolved with a repeat sample or an RNA test a few weeks later.
Means: HIV confirmed by independent tests.
Next: Treatment begins with a specialist; an undetectable viral load protects partners.
Waiting is often the hardest part: these practical tools for coping while you wait for results can help. For a confirmed result, read about HIV treatment, viral load and CD4 and the HIV care continuum.
Know before you test
Many expatriates around Fujairah City and Dibba Al Fujairah are afraid to even ask a question about HIV. Understanding the rules, and what counselling can and cannot do, is the first step to a calm decision.
HIV screening is part of the UAE's residence-visa medical fitness process. According to the UAE Government, residence applicants must be free of communicable diseases including HIV and TB.
In Fujairah, HIV and STD tests, examinations and prescriptions must come from providers licensed by the Ministry of Health and Prevention (MOHAP) / Emirates Health Services. Licensed facilities follow UAE rules on notifying certain infections, including HIV.
A confidential conversation: an honest look at your risk, the right test and timing, and support with anxiety. A first name is enough to begin.
We do not give legal or immigration advice, and we never advise anyone to avoid lawful requirements. For visa or employment questions, please consult a qualified UAE legal professional.

An honest review of what happened. PEP timing first.
Calm, practical support for the waiting days.
Unhurried sessions on risk, partners, family and work.
The right tests on the right dates, results explained.
Local support
Between voyages and shifts, there is rarely time for a clinic. Online counselling travels with you, and we plan testing around your next port or leave.
If the nearest specialist is a long drive away, an online session helps you decide what can be done locally and when a trip is really worthwhile.
Shared rooms, six-day weeks and no private space make it hard to ask for help. Our WhatsApp sessions in Hindi fit around your shift, and nobody at work or in your room needs to know.
Local care
Searching for infectious disease doctors near me in Fujairah will mostly bring up hospital departments and private clinics. Specialist HIV and infectious disease care here is provided by Fujairah Hospital and licensed private hospitals on the East Coast. Many residents can book a specialist directly at a licensed private hospital, although insurance plans differ in what they require.

Dr. Yuvraj Monga is an Indian HIV, AIDS and STD specialist physician (MBBS, MD) with a fellowship in infectious diseases and more than 25 years of practice. For people in Fujairah he provides online counselling and guidance from India; tests, examinations and prescriptions in the UAE must come from a provider licensed there.
PrEP (pre-exposure prophylaxis) is medicine that people without HIV take before a possible exposure to prevent HIV. The most common form is a daily tablet containing tenofovir and emtricitabine. Taken as prescribed, PrEP reduces the risk of getting HIV from sex by about 99%, according to the US CDC. It does not protect against other STIs, so condoms and regular STI testing still matter.
PrEP is not PEP. PrEP is taken before exposure. If you have already had an exposure in the last 72 hours, you need PEP: please consult a doctor or hospital in your own area immediately. Read PEP vs PrEP and who should consider PrEP.
After a consultation and baseline tests, Dr. Monga can prescribe PrEP. Medicines are couriered anywhere in India, and for clients abroad we discuss the safest legal way to get your PrEP during the consultation.
In the UAE, bringing in or importing HIV medicines is strictly controlled, and breaking these rules can have serious consequences. Never order or carry PrEP into the UAE without confirming it is permitted; discuss local options with a UAE-licensed doctor, or start PrEP while you are in India.
Our vision: a life free of HIV for everyone we counsel, through prevention, early testing and the right treatment.

The human immunodeficiency virus targets the immune system's CD4 cells. Transmission requires specific body fluids to enter the body, usually through condomless anal or vaginal sex or shared needles; kissing, handshakes, shared meals and swimming pools pose no risk.
Some people develop a flu-like illness 2–4 weeks after infection: fever, sore throat, rash, swollen glands, aching muscles, tiredness or mouth ulcers. Many have no symptoms at all. Because these signs are common in everyday illness, and in anxiety, only a correctly timed test can give an answer.

PEP is not offered after 72 hours, so every hour counts.
People diagnosed and treated early live long, healthy lives.
Treatment that suppresses the virus also stops sexual transmission.
Syphilis, gonorrhoea and chlamydia are often silent and raise HIV risk.
