Medically reviewed by Dr. Yuvraj Monga, MBBS, MD · Updated
Overview
Mussafah is Abu Dhabi's industrial and workforce hub, with large labour accommodation areas and the neighbouring residential districts of Shabiya and MBZ City.
Many workers in Mussafah and ICAD come from India, Pakistan, Bangladesh and Nepal, and some have spent years away from their families. Sexual health worries are common but almost never discussed. With one day off a week and no wish to involve a camp clinic or employer, a confidential WhatsApp consultation in Hindi is often the safest first step.
This guide covers what people in Mussafah ask us most: which HIV test to take and when, how long results take, how HIV is confirmed, and what post-test counselling should include. When you're ready, you can talk it through with Dr. Yuvraj Monga, an Indian HIV specialist, online.
We also counsel people in nearby Abu Dhabi, Al Ain and Al Dhafra, and across Dubai and the UAE.
The program
The HIV Testing Counselling program is run by Dr. Yuvraj Monga, MBBS, MD, an HIV, AIDS and STD specialist physician with a fellowship in infectious diseases and more than 25 years of experience managing and treating patients from around the world, including thousands from the Gulf. Our counselling follows WHO guidelines and our own EXACT program.
Easy consultation, friendly follow-up. We were among the first to build counselling around the whole journey: exposure, anxiety, counselling, testing and treatment.
Know before you test
For people living in Mussafah, an HIV question rarely feels purely medical. It is tied up with work, residence status and family. Here is what residents should know, stated plainly and responsibly.
Foreign nationals applying for or renewing a UAE residence visa undergo a medical fitness test that includes HIV. The UAE Government states that applicants must be free of communicable diseases such as HIV and TB.
In Abu Dhabi, HIV and STD tests, examinations and prescriptions must come from providers licensed by the Department of Health – Abu Dhabi (DoH). Licensed facilities follow UAE rules on notifying certain infections, including HIV.
A confidential conversation: an honest look at your risk, the right test and timing, and support with anxiety. A first name is enough to begin.
Counselling does not replace legal advice. For anything about visas, employment or the law, consult a qualified professional in the UAE; we will never suggest avoiding lawful obligations.

Local care
Searching for infectious disease doctors near me in Mussafah will mostly bring up hospital departments and private clinics. Specialist HIV and infectious disease care here is provided by infectious disease clinics at SEHA hospitals and DoH-licensed private hospitals. Many residents can book a specialist directly at a licensed private hospital, although insurance plans differ in what they require.

Yes in training and focus: an MBBS, MD physician with an infectious diseases fellowship and 25+ years in HIV and STD care. For clients in Mussafah, he works online, explaining, planning and supporting, while UAE-licensed clinicians handle examinations, tests and prescriptions.
PrEP (pre-exposure prophylaxis) is medicine that people without HIV take before a possible exposure to prevent HIV. The most common form is a daily tablet containing tenofovir and emtricitabine. Taken as prescribed, PrEP reduces the risk of getting HIV from sex by about 99%, according to the US CDC. It does not protect against other STIs, so condoms and regular STI testing still matter.
PrEP is not PEP. PrEP is taken before exposure. If you have already had an exposure in the last 72 hours, you need PEP: please consult a doctor or hospital in your own area immediately. Read PEP vs PrEP and who should consider PrEP.
After a consultation and baseline tests, Dr. Monga can prescribe PrEP. Medicines are couriered anywhere in India, and for clients abroad we discuss the safest legal way to get your PrEP during the consultation.
In the UAE, bringing in or importing HIV medicines is strictly controlled, and breaking these rules can have serious consequences. Never order or carry PrEP into the UAE without confirming it is permitted; discuss local options with a UAE-licensed doctor, or start PrEP while you are in India.
Our vision: a life free of HIV for everyone we counsel, through prevention, early testing and the right treatment.

Facts first: what happened, when, and whether PEP is still possible.
Calm, practical support for the waiting days.
Unhurried sessions on risk, partners, family and work.
The right tests on the right dates, results explained.
Testing journey
Good HIV testing has two conversations around it. Before the test: the right test at the right time. After the test: what the result really means for you. People in Mussafah often get the test without either conversation, which is why so many stay anxious after a negative result.
Exposure review, PEP check, the right test type and date, how results are shared.
A 4th-generation antigen/antibody blood test at a licensed laboratory.
Support through the wait, without constant symptom-checking.
What it means for you, whether to retest, and what to do next.
It is the conversation held when you receive an HIV test result. It confirms that you have understood the result correctly, checks whether the test was taken late enough to be conclusive, plans any retest, and, if the result is reactive, provides support and a clear route to specialist care.
Screening tests are designed to catch every possible infection, so a reactive screen is a signal to check further, not a diagnosis, and a non-reactive screen is only final after the window period. Understanding just these two facts prevents most of the panic we see.
Results
Knowing the real HIV test results time helps you plan and stops you reading meaning into a delay. Laboratories in Abu Dhabi are generally quick, but the more important clock is the window period:
| Test | When it becomes reliable after exposure | Typical time to result |
|---|---|---|
| Nucleic acid (RNA) test | Earliest detection, from roughly 10 days onwards | Usually a few days |
| 4th-generation antigen/antibody test | Detects most infections by about 6 weeks | Often within a day or two at many UAE laboratories |
| Antibody-only rapid test | Trustworthy from about 3 months | A few minutes; reactive results go to the lab |
| Confirmation after a reactive screen | Supplementary assays at a reference lab | Several additional days |
While you wait, resist the urge to retest every few days; it rarely helps. If a result is delayed, a quick call to the laboratory usually explains why. Our guide to the window period explains the timing, and how the HIV window period affects accuracy goes deeper.

Confirmation
People often ask us, “What test is used to confirm a diagnosis of HIV?” The answer is a confirmation process with several steps:
A highly sensitive 4th-generation antigen/antibody test, or a rapid test. Its job is to miss nothing, so reactive screens must be checked.
A different assay, such as an HIV-1/HIV-2 antibody differentiation test or a Western blot, run at a reference laboratory.
When results disagree, or infection may be very recent, a nucleic acid test detects the virus directly.
A fresh blood sample rules out any mix-up before a final answer is given.
“Serology” means blood tests for antibodies and antigen. In a serology test counselling session we go through your report line by line: the assay used, the cut-off values, and what “reactive”, “non-reactive” or “indeterminate” really mean. You can share a photo of the report with your name covered.
After your result
Every result needs a different conversation. This is how we approach post-test counselling with people from ICAD, Mussafah Industrial Area and the rest of Mussafah:
Means: No HIV detected by that test.
Next: Conclusive only if taken after the window period for that test type. Otherwise, retest on the right date.
Means: The screening test found something that needs checking.
Next: Not a diagnosis. A confirmatory test is always done before anyone is told they have HIV.
Means: The confirmatory test was unclear.
Next: Usually a non-specific reaction; a repeat sample or RNA test a few weeks later settles it.
Means: HIV infection confirmed by two different tests.
Next: Treatment works: most people reach an undetectable viral load within months. Specialist care follows.
Waiting is often the hardest part: these practical tools for coping while you wait for results can help. For a confirmed result, read about HIV treatment, viral load and CD4 and the HIV care continuum.
Local support
Shared rooms, six-day weeks and no private space make it hard to ask for help. Our WhatsApp sessions in Hindi fit around your shift, and nobody at work or in your room needs to know.
Thinking of your wife or husband before yourself is natural. We help you understand your own risk first, then decide how and when to talk, and how both of you can test safely.
HIV basics
HIV (human immunodeficiency virus) weakens the immune system by destroying CD4 cells. It passes through blood, semen, vaginal and rectal fluids and breast milk, most often during condomless sex or through shared needles, and never through everyday contact such as hugging, sharing food or using the same bathroom.
Early HIV can cause fever, rash, sore throat and swollen glands for a week or two, or nothing at all. These overlap with colds, heat exhaustion and stress, so we never diagnose by symptoms. We plan the right test instead.
