Overview
The Al Dhafra region, home to Ruwais's refineries and remote energy sites, is the UAE's largest and most sparsely populated area.
Many people in Ruwais, Madinat Zayed and the oil and gas sites work long rotations far from family. Distances to specialist care are large, and in small communities privacy is hard to keep. Online counselling lets them get expert guidance immediately, without leaving site, and plan any testing or travel sensibly.
This guide covers what people in Al Dhafra ask us most: which HIV test to take and when, how long results take, how HIV is confirmed, and what post-test counselling should include. When you're ready, you can talk it through with Dr. Yuvraj Monga, an Indian HIV specialist, online.
We also counsel people in nearby Abu Dhabi, Mussafah and Al Ain, and across Dubai and the UAE.
The program
The HIV Testing Counselling program is run by Dr. Yuvraj Monga, MBBS, MD, an HIV, AIDS and STD specialist physician with a fellowship in infectious diseases and more than 25 years of experience managing and treating patients from around the world, including thousands from the Gulf. Our counselling follows WHO guidelines and our own EXACT program.
Easy consultation, friendly follow-up. We were among the first to build counselling around the whole journey: exposure, anxiety, counselling, testing and treatment.
Testing journey
Whether you live near Ruwais or Ghayathi, the testing journey is the same four steps. Pre- and post-test counselling are what make each step make sense:
A risk review and PEP decision before anything else.
Blood drawn at a licensed UAE laboratory, usually a 4th-generation test.
Support for anxiety while you wait, so you don't repeat tests needlessly.
What it means for you, whether to retest, and what to do next.
The part of HIV testing that answers: “So what does this mean for me?” A doctor or counsellor explains your result against your exposure date and test type, tells you whether you need another test, and helps you take the next step, whatever the result.
Screening tests are designed to catch every possible infection, so a reactive screen is a signal to check further, not a diagnosis, and a non-reactive screen is only final after the window period. Understanding just these two facts prevents most of the panic we see.
Results
“How long do HIV test results take?” There are really two answers: how soon after an exposure a test becomes reliable, and how long the laboratory takes to report. For people in Al Dhafra, a realistic picture looks like this:
| Test | When it becomes reliable after exposure | Typical time to result |
|---|---|---|
| HIV RNA (NAT) test | Can detect HIV from about 10–33 days | Days, depending on the laboratory |
| 4th-generation antigen/antibody test | Detects most infections by about 6 weeks | Often within a day or two at many UAE laboratories |
| Antibody-only rapid test | Trustworthy from about 3 months | A few minutes; reactive results go to the lab |
| Confirmatory testing | Done only after a reactive screen | Adds several more days at a reference laboratory |
Turnaround times vary by laboratory; ask when you book. If you took PEP, follow-up HIV tests are usually planned about 4–6 weeks and 3 months after the exposure. Read more about how the HIV window period affects accuracy and our own guide to the window period.

Confirmation
What test is used to confirm a diagnosis of HIV? Not one test, but a sequence. Nobody should be diagnosed on a single screening result:
A highly sensitive 4th-generation antigen/antibody test, or a rapid test. Its job is to miss nothing, so reactive screens must be checked.
A different assay, such as an HIV-1/HIV-2 antibody differentiation test or a Western blot, run at a reference laboratory.
When results disagree, or infection may be very recent, a nucleic acid test detects the virus directly.
A fresh blood sample rules out any mix-up before a final answer is given.
Index values, signal-to-cutoff ratios, “repeatedly reactive”: lab reports in Abu Dhabi use language most people have never seen. We translate it into a clear answer and a next step.
After your result
Not sure what your report means? Use this decoder, then book a session so we can look at your result alongside your exposure date and test type:
Means: No HIV detected by that test.
Next: Conclusive only if taken after the window period for that test type. Otherwise, retest on the right date.
Means: The screening test found something that needs checking.
Next: Not a diagnosis. A confirmatory test is always done before anyone is told they have HIV.
Means: The confirmatory test was unclear.
Next: Usually a non-specific reaction; a repeat sample or RNA test a few weeks later settles it.
Means: HIV infection confirmed by two different tests.
Next: Treatment works: most people reach an undetectable viral load within months. Specialist care follows.
Waiting is often the hardest part: these practical tools for coping while you wait for results can help. For a confirmed result, read about HIV treatment, viral load and CD4 and the HIV care continuum.
Know before you test
Before you search for a test in Al Dhafra, it helps to understand the setting. These are the facts we explain to almost every client, in plain language:
HIV screening is part of the UAE's residence-visa medical fitness process. According to the UAE Government, residence applicants must be free of communicable diseases including HIV and TB.
HIV and STD testing in Abu Dhabi is carried out by facilities licensed by the Department of Health – Abu Dhabi (DoH), which follow UAE regulations, including the notification of certain infectious diseases such as HIV.
Counselling gives you accurate information and a clear plan before you act. It is private, unhurried and available in Hindi or English.
Counselling does not replace legal advice. For anything about visas, employment or the law, consult a qualified professional in the UAE; we will never suggest avoiding lawful obligations.

Our approach
EXposure · Anxiety · Counselling · Testing & Treatment
An honest review of what happened. PEP timing first.
Tools to stop the late-night symptom searching.
Unhurried sessions on risk, partners, family and work.
A dated plan and clear guidance alongside your UAE care.
Local support
If the nearest specialist is a long drive away, an online session helps you decide what can be done locally and when a trip is really worthwhile.
Shared rooms, six-day weeks and no private space make it hard to ask for help. Our WhatsApp sessions in Hindi fit around your shift, and nobody at work or in your room needs to know.
Thinking of your wife or husband before yourself is natural. We help you understand your own risk first, then decide how and when to talk, and how both of you can test safely.
Local care
Most people looking for an infectious disease doctor in Al Dhafra need one of three things: a test, an explanation, or ongoing care. Tests and treatment come from SEHA hospitals in Al Dhafra and specialist clinics in Abu Dhabi city. The unhurried, private explanation, before and after, is what our counselling adds.

For HIV and STD testing, treatment and specialist follow-up in the emirate.
Check which clinics and labs are in your network before you book.

Yes in training and focus: an MBBS, MD physician with an infectious diseases fellowship and 25+ years in HIV and STD care. For clients in Al Dhafra, he works online, explaining, planning and supporting, while UAE-licensed clinicians handle examinations, tests and prescriptions.
PrEP (pre-exposure prophylaxis) is medicine that people without HIV take before a possible exposure to prevent HIV. The most common form is a daily tablet containing tenofovir and emtricitabine. Taken as prescribed, PrEP reduces the risk of getting HIV from sex by about 99%, according to the US CDC. It does not protect against other STIs, so condoms and regular STI testing still matter.
PrEP is not PEP. PrEP is taken before exposure. If you have already had an exposure in the last 72 hours, you need PEP: please consult a doctor or hospital in your own area immediately. Read PEP vs PrEP and who should consider PrEP.
After a consultation and baseline tests, Dr. Monga can prescribe PrEP. Medicines are couriered anywhere in India, and for clients abroad we discuss the safest legal way to get your PrEP during the consultation.
In the UAE, bringing in or importing HIV medicines is strictly controlled, and breaking these rules can have serious consequences. Never order or carry PrEP into the UAE without confirming it is permitted; discuss local options with a UAE-licensed doctor, or start PrEP while you are in India.
Our vision: a life free of HIV for everyone we counsel, through prevention, early testing and the right treatment.

Book on WhatsAppHIV basics
HIV is a virus that gradually depletes the CD4 cells which coordinate the body's defences. It needs a specific route, mainly condomless sex or shared injecting equipment. Without treatment it can progress to AIDS; with treatment, people live long, healthy lives.
Some people develop a flu-like illness 2–4 weeks after infection: fever, sore throat, rash, swollen glands, aching muscles, tiredness or mouth ulcers. Many have no symptoms at all. Because these signs are common in everyday illness, and in anxiety, only a correctly timed test can give an answer.

PEP is not offered after 72 hours, so every hour counts.
People diagnosed and treated early live long, healthy lives.
An undetectable viral load does not pass HIV through sex.
Syphilis, gonorrhoea and chlamydia are often silent and raise HIV risk.
