HIV Counselling in Kingston: Where to Start
Kingston combines Queen's University, the Royal Military College and CFB Kingston in one historic small city.
Kingston's population swings with the academic year and military postings, so many people here are far from home and their usual doctor. Students worry about privacy at campus health services, and military members worry about how a sexual health issue might be recorded. Online counselling is independent of both, and it gives you space to think before you decide where to test.
Below you'll find what people in Kingston ask us most: where infectious disease doctors practise locally, how long an HIV test takes to come back in Ontario, what test is used to confirm HIV, and what happens in post-test counselling. When you're ready, Dr. Yuvraj Monga can talk it through with you on WhatsApp or video.
Whether you're looking for HIV counselling in Kingston, an infectious disease doctor in Kingston or simply a straight answer about a test, start here. We also counsel people in nearby Toronto and Ottawa, and across Ontario.

Pre- and Post-HIV Test Counselling: What's the Difference?
“Pre- and post-test counselling” sounds formal, but it simply means two honest conversations: one to make sure you take the right test at the right time, and one to make sure you understand the answer. Here is how they differ for someone testing in Kingston.
| Pre-test counselling | Post-test counselling | |
|---|---|---|
| Timing | At or before the testing visit | After the result comes back |
| Key question | “Is this the right test, at the right time?” | “What does this result mean for me?” |
| Topics | Risk assessment, test type, window period, consent, privacy | Interpretation, retest dates, PrEP or condoms, confirmation, treatment, partners |
| Most useful for | Anyone unsure whether or when to test | Anyone anxious about a result, or with a reactive or indeterminate report |
| In Kingston | Often a short chat with a nurse at the clinic | Brief at the clinic; a dedicated session gives time for every question |
What is post-test counselling, in plain words?
It is the part of HIV testing that answers “So what does this mean for me?” A counsellor or doctor explains your result in light of your exposure date and test type, tells you whether you need a repeat test, and, if the result is reactive, walks you through confirmation, treatment and who to tell. Done well, it prevents both false reassurance and unnecessary panic.
Why screening tests need explaining
Screening tests in Ontario are deliberately sensitive, so they occasionally react when there is no HIV, and they can miss an infection that is only days old. HIV screening test counselling puts your result in context: which test, how long after the exposure, and what, if anything, you need to do next.
Unsure whether your exposure even needs a test? Our guides on exposure with an unknown partner and exposure with a known partner help you judge the risk before your pre-test session.
HIV Test Results Time in Kingston
“How long do HIV test results take?” is the question we hear most from Kingston. The honest answer is that it depends on the test. Here is what to expect in Ontario:
- ~1 minute
Home self-test kit
Bought at a pharmacy or ordered free through programs in some provinces, the self-test reads in a minute but only looks for antibodies, so test at 12 weeks for a final answer.
- 15 minutes or less
Point-of-care rapid testing
Offered at many Ontario clinics and outreach sites. Any reactive result is sent for laboratory confirmation.
- Several days
Standard lab screening
The antigen/antibody test ordered by a doctor, nurse practitioner or sexual health clinic in Kingston. Accurate for most people from 6 weeks after exposure. Your result is sent to the clinician who ordered it; ask at the visit how you will be told.
- A few more days
Supplementary testing
A reactive screen goes to the Public Health Ontario Laboratory for a different confirmatory assay, sometimes with an HIV RNA test.

A delay usually means nothing more than a busy lab. If you have not heard back after two weeks, call the clinic; don't assume the worst. If you took PEP, follow-up tests are typically at 4–6 weeks and again at 3 months after the exposure.
Considering a self-test first? Read what home HIV testing kits can and cannot tell you, and our own guide to the HIV window period.
What Test Is Used to Confirm a Diagnosis of HIV?
No one in Canada is diagnosed with HIV on the basis of a single screening test. Every reactive result goes through confirmation, and in Ontario that happens at the Public Health Ontario Laboratory. So, what test is used to confirm a diagnosis of HIV? The sequence usually looks like this:
The screen
Highly sensitive by design. It flags anything that might be HIV, which is why a small number of reactive screens turn out negative on confirmation.
The confirmatory assay
The Public Health Ontario Laboratory runs a second, different test, typically one that tells HIV-1 from HIV-2 antibodies. Two independent tests must agree.
Viral RNA when unclear
When the first two disagree, a nucleic acid test looks directly for HIV genetic material. It also detects very early infection.
A fresh sample
Most labs want a second blood sample before a final diagnosis, so no one is diagnosed on a single tube of blood.
HIV serology test counselling
“Serology” simply means tests on the blood serum for antibodies and antigens. HIV serology test counselling helps you read the lab report: what “reactive”, “non-reactive” and “indeterminate” mean, why a supplementary test was run, and what the final interpretation tells you. We go through your report line by line.
Post-Test Counselling for HIV: What Happens After Each Result
Post-test counselling looks different depending on what the report says. Here is what we cover for each result, for people in Kingston and everywhere else:
Non-reactive (negative)
If your test was taken after the window period for that test, a non-reactive result means you do not have HIV from that exposure. If it was earlier, you will need a repeat test at the right time. Post-test counselling also covers how to stay negative: condoms, PrEP and regular STI testing.
- Was the test after the window period?
- Do I need one more test?
- Is PrEP worth considering?
Indeterminate
An unclear result is one of the most stressful outcomes, precisely because it is not an answer. In most cases a follow-up sample a few weeks later is clearly negative. We explain why the lab flagged it, what the repeat test will look for and how to manage the days in between.
- Could this be a false reaction?
- Will an RNA test help?
- Should I avoid sex until it's clear?
Reactive / confirmed positive
A confirmed diagnosis changes plans, not your future. HIV specialists in Kingston will start treatment quickly, and most people reach an undetectable viral load within months. Counselling gives you space for the emotions, and practical help with who to tell, when, and how.
- How soon does treatment start?
- Will my employer find out?
- Can I still have children?
Waiting is often the hardest part: these practical tools for coping while you wait for HIV results can help. If your result is confirmed positive, read about HIV treatment options, viral load and CD4 counts and the HIV care continuum, from diagnosis to undetectable.
Questions about HIV disclosure and the law in Canada are complex. For legal advice, contact a legal clinic such as the HIV & AIDS Legal Clinic Ontario (HALCO) or the HIV Legal Network.

Managing PEP side effects
Feeling queasy
A light snack with each dose often helps; your prescriber can add an anti-nausea tablet.
Gas and bloating
Avoid fizzy drinks and heavy meals for a few days.
Loose stools
Oral rehydration and bland food; seek care after two days.
Fatigue
Usually eases by week two; keep a steady routine.
Fever
Fever is not a usual side effect. See a doctor soon, particularly with a rash.
Never stop PEP on your own. Get urgent care for rash with fever, yellow eyes or skin, dark urine, severe abdominal pain or repeated vomiting.
HIV in Brief: What It Is, Symptoms, and Why Early Advice Matters
What is HIV?
HIV, the human immunodeficiency virus, weakens the immune system by destroying CD4 cells. It passes through blood, semen, pre-seminal fluid, vaginal and rectal fluids, and breast milk, most often during condomless sex or by sharing needles. Without treatment it can progress to AIDS over years. With treatment, it is a manageable condition.
Symptoms to know about
Some people get a short flu-like illness 2–4 weeks after infection; many notice nothing at all. Because these symptoms are so common in everyday illness, and in anxiety, they cannot tell you whether you have HIV. Only a test taken at the right time can.
- Fever
- Sore throat
- Rash
- Swollen lymph nodes
- Muscle aches
- Fatigue
- Night sweats
- Mouth ulcers

Why consult early?
Time-sensitive prevention
PEP must begin within three days. Talking to someone early is how people find out whether they need it.
Early treatment, normal life
Starting treatment early protects the immune system and keeps life expectancy close to normal.
Undetectable = untransmittable
Treatment that suppresses the virus also prevents sexual transmission.
Silent STIs
Syphilis, gonorrhoea and chlamydia often cause no symptoms and raise HIV risk, so they belong in the same test plan.
Following WHO Guidelines: The 5 Cs of HIV Testing
Our counselling follows WHO guidelines on HIV testing services. They boil down to five words, the 5 Cs, which you can expect from any good testing service in Kingston:

You decide whether to test, freely and informed.
Confidentiality
Health information protected by law and by us.
Counselling
Brief information beforehand and full counselling afterwards.
Correct results
Accurate testing, with reactive results always confirmed.
Connection

HIV Testing and Counselling Questions from Kingston
Who are the best doctors for HIV/AIDS in Kingston?
Specialist HIV care in Kingston is led mainly by the infectious diseases clinic at Kingston Health Sciences Centre. The best choice depends on your needs, location and referral. Dr. Yuvraj Monga offers online counselling to help you understand your situation and prepare before you choose.
Is Dr. Monga an infectious disease doctor?
Dr. Yuvraj Monga is an HIV, AIDS and STD specialist physician (MBBS, MD) with a fellowship in infectious diseases and more than 25 years of experience. He provides online counselling, education and guidance from India. Tests and prescriptions in Canada must come from a locally licensed provider.
How long do HIV test results take in Kingston?
Self-tests and rapid clinic tests give results in minutes. A standard lab blood test usually takes from a few days to about two weeks. If the screen is reactive, confirmation at the Public Health Ontario Laboratory adds a few more days.
Can I get tested anonymously in Kingston?
Ontario offers anonymous HIV testing at designated sites, and the GetaKit program can mail a free HIV self-test to eligible residents.
Is PrEP covered in Ontario?
OHIP+ covers PrEP for residents aged 24 and under without a private plan; others usually use workplace or school insurance, the Trillium Drug Program, ODSP, Ontario Works or the Ontario Drug Benefit at 65+.
Where can I get PEP in Kingston at night or on weekends?
Go to a hospital emergency department and ask for an HIV PEP assessment. PEP must start within 72 hours of the exposure, and the sooner the better.
What is post-test counselling for HIV?
It is the conversation after an HIV test result. It explains what the result means for your exposure date and test type, whether you need a repeat test, how to stay protected, and, for a reactive result, how confirmation, treatment and partner notification work.
What happens in pre- and post-test HIV counselling?
Before the test, you discuss the exposure, the window period, the right test type and how you will get results. After the test, the result is explained, any retest is scheduled, and you get a prevention plan or, if needed, emotional support and a referral.
What is HIV serology test counselling?
Serology tests look for HIV antibodies and antigen in the blood. Serology test counselling explains your lab report, including terms like reactive, non-reactive and indeterminate, and what the final interpretation means.
Is an HIV self-test reliable?
Yes, for antibodies, when used at the right time. Canada's approved self-test can miss very recent infection, so rely on it from about 12 weeks after exposure, and confirm any reactive self-test with a lab blood test.
Where can I get an HIV test in Kingston?
Options in Kingston include KFL&A Public Health sexual health clinic and HIV/AIDS Regional Services (HARS). Ontario offers anonymous HIV testing at designated sites, and the GetaKit program can mail a free HIV self-test to eligible residents. Check hours and eligibility before you go, and test at the right time after your exposure.
Is there an infectious disease or HIV clinic in Kingston?
Yes. Specialist HIV care in Kingston is provided by the infectious diseases clinic at Kingston Health Sciences Centre. You usually need a referral from a family doctor, nurse practitioner or walk-in clinic, but you can get tested without one.
Will an HIV test affect my study permit or immigration application?
A test at a local clinic is confidential and separate from immigration. The immigration medical exam includes its own HIV test for most permanent-residence applicants, and HIV on its own does not automatically make someone inadmissible; IRCC assesses each case.
Can I talk to Dr. Monga in Punjabi?
Yes. For people in Kingston, sessions are available in English and Punjabi, and in Hindi too. Just mention your preferred language when you message us on WhatsApp.
What time are sessions for Kingston?
Sessions are booked in your local time (Eastern Time). India is 10 hours 30 minutes ahead, one hour less in summer.
