What are the symptoms of HIV?
It is not really correct to rely on the symptoms to find out if a person is infected with HIV or not. Instead one should get the tests done to find out. Because knowing the status of the infection will help in taking the right decision at the right time. Depending upon the stages of the infection, there are different symptoms. These stages are :
- The early stage,
- The clinical latency stage, or
- AIDS (the late stage of HIV infection).
Early Stage Symptoms of HIV
Two to four weeks long flu like sickness and the symptoms of this stage are Fever, Chills, Rash, Night Sweats, Muscle aches, Sore throat, Fatigue, Swollen lymph nodes, Mouth ulcers, etc. etc. Such symptoms can last for days to weeks and this is the time when the tests for HIV may or may not show up correct results.
Clinical Latency Stage Symptoms of HIV
The symptoms of Clinical Latency Stage, also known as Chronic HIV infection are mild or none.
Symptoms of Progression to AIDS
Rapid weight loss, Recurring fever, Extreme fatigue, Prolonged swelling of the lymph glands in the armpits; groin; or neck, Diarrhoea, Sores of the mouth; anus; or genitals, Pneumonia, Red; Brown; Pink; or Purplish blotches on or under the skin or inside the mouth; nose; or eyelids, Memory loss
HIV symptoms in Men
The symptoms of HIV can vary greatly from person to person. No two men with HIV will experience the exact same symptoms. However, an HIV infection in men will generally follow this pattern:
- acute illness
- asymptomatic period
- advanced infection
HIV symptoms in women
In general, the symptoms of HIV in women aren’t all that different to those a man would experience:
Early stages of HIV: A short “flu-like” illness that occurs about 2 weeks after infection.
Mid-stage HIV: A latency period of up to ten years where few (if any) symptoms are experienced. Swollen or painful glands are likely to be the main indication of an HIV infection during this time.
Advanced stage of HIV: Constitutional symptoms such as fatigue, weight-loss and dementia can signify a HIV infection is advancing into its later stages. However, there are some vaginal HIV symptoms that occur in women only:
- Vaginal yeast infections.
- Abnormal Pap smears.
- Pelvic inflammatory disease.
- Unusual menstrual cycles.
